Rules for Writing
So I keep trying to draft up a piece where I list out the rules1 that I've made for myself as I work on this whole writing project, and then I get stuck in this loop where I don't actually post anything. I feel like I have to go and EXPLAIN each of these rules in varying levels of depth and detail - and then I realize I've spent like 2 hours on this thing and I'm only on rule 1. So, in the spirit of putting out imperfect things into the world, here is my current list of rules (guidelines?) that I have been finding useful so far. I can write up the explanations later.
An incomplete list of my personal rules for writing:
1. No being stuck
2. Bad writing is okay
3. Write everyday
4. Write anytime I feel inspired to write
5. Remove unproductive sources of pressure
6. No punishments and no rewards - only the actual thing
7. No writing for a fake "supposed to be" goal
I feel the need to acknowledge here that I don't think any of these ideas are original to me. I can’t think of any specific source but I feel like I've seen flavors of each of these rules whenever I read about HOW TO IMPROVE AT WRITING.
